Conjunto cerâmico da Rua do Rosário 73-75 da cidade do Porto - publicado

Este livro pretende apresentar, de forma simples e gráfica, tanto à comunidade científica como às pessoas interessadas na cerâmica e na arqueologia, os materiais arqueológicos que, exumados no decurso do acompanhamento arqueológico do nº 73 da Rua do Rosário, se assumem como uma amostra elucidativa da vida quotidiana de um curto período da vida na cidade do Porto, nos momentos centrais do século XIX. Trata-se de um pequeno conjunto cerâmico de meados do século XIX, não muito expressivo no que respeita ao número de peças, embora significativo pela sua homogeneidade. As peças cerâmicas são apresentadas no catálogo de acordo com o tipo de material: vidrados de chumbo, faianças, cerâmica vermelha e cerâmica preta. Não se pretende neste livro, realizar uma investigação aprofundada sobre o material arqueológico. Pelo contrário, é objectivo deste estudo a divulgação dos achados de forma a que a informação oferecida possa ser utilizada por outros investigadores.

This manuscript presents the findings of a standard anthropological and palaeopathological analysis on medieval skeletons from Bragança (northern Portugal). The skeletons come from two cemeteries associated with the churches of São João and São Vicente. These burials date from the 13th to the 15th centuries, although some at São Vicente also date to the 16th century.
The osteological analysis of the human remains from the churches of São João and São Vicente has provided information on the lifestyle of these once living medieval populations. The present work examines the demographic profile of these two groups and investigates some of their physical characteristics such as stature. It also attempts to reconstruct living conditions by means of palaeopathological analysis including the examination of any infectious diseases, metabolic conditions and trauma among other lesions.
This work is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the process of excavation and recording of the human remains from Bragança. The second part reviews the study of human skeletal remains and their potential for our understanding of the past. Finally, the third part includes the methods employed and the results obtained from the anthropological analysis of the Bragança skeletons, followed by a discussion and an interpretation of the results.
Dr Nicholas Marquez-Grant works as an archaeologist and anthropologist for LGC Forensics (UK) and is also Research Associate of the Institute of Human Sciences, School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford (UK).
